Trilliant Gemstones

All About Trilliant Gemstones

The trilliant cut, sometimes called the trillion cut, is a gemstone cut characterized by a triangular shape with three equal sides and features a flat table like the brilliant round cut. This cut is often used in accent stones but makes a unique, modern, and radiant center stone due to its many facets. When used as a sidestone, a trilliant cut will typically feature 31 facets, but when used as a center stone, it will feature 50 to play up the stone’s shine and visual intrigue. Those with a penchant for the eccentric will certainly enjoy pieces of exquisite jewelry featuring this striking cut.

History of the Trilliant Cut

Though many variations of this cut have gone by a plethora of different names, the trilliant cut is officially attributed to diamond merchant Leon Finker. In the 1960s, the trilliant cut was born and later patented by Finker’s son, Marvin, in the early 1970s. Several other diamond merchants patented similar designs around the same time, such as the Henry Meyer Diamond Company. However, today the Finkers are still said to have created and perfected the shape. The terms “trillion” and “trilliant” are used interchangeably to describe this triangular cut.

Why Choose a Trilliant Gemstone

This unique gemstone cut is known for its eye-catching modern shape and incredible brilliance. Derived from the round brilliant cut, the trilliant shape is excellent at hiding any color and inclusion the stone may have, with its impressive number of facets all reflecting an excessive amount of light. This cut is versatile in that it can be cut with a slight curve or convex shape to make the stone appear larger or given straight edges to perform better as an accent stone. While it is rare to see a trilliant cut used on a center stone, they make phenomenal side stones, especially in settings like the romantic three stone.
